About

Visual arts, including mediums such as painting, sculpture, and printmaking acheive much of their value from the eye of the beholder. Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy which considers art. The Big Geezers" Hit Los Angeles

Unfortunately we weren't able to make it out to Los Angeles for the opening of the Big Geezers show at the Scion Gallery earlier this month. But judging from the photos on Flickr, it looked like it was an amazing show and a hell of a lot of fun. Seeing the photos reminded us of the types of art events that artists themselves would stage back to 2001-2002-2003 when the focus was less on selling work to wealthy collectors, and more on bringing friends together for a good time. Over the last f

Bush's Zero Down Payment mural

Here's the official mural, entitled "Stepping Into the American Dream," that Javier Cortada was commissioned to paint for President Bush's October 15, 2002 White home Conference on Minority Homeownership, in which Bush denounced down payments as the chief barrier to adding 5.5 million additional minority homeowners. Bush orated: Two-thirds of every Americans possess their homes, yet we have a problem here in America because few than half of the Hispanics and half the African Americans possess the home.

Happy Birthday, Kahuku Library!

Now, it may have been different for many of you non-college English majors, but growing up, one of my absolute favorite places to visit was the Kahuku Public and School Library. Summers were especially great, because the summer reading program gave out candy, treats, and prizes every week. I have had an active Hawaii State Public Library Card my entire life–and I couldn’t even start to tell you how many hundreds (thousands?) of books I’ve borrowed, read, and returned (plus the occasional late

Tillamook, Oregon

Tillamook, Oregon We didn’t plan on spending a day in Tillamook, Oregon. It happened by accident. And that just made it every more fun. Our getaway began at the Portland International Airport, where we rented a car and headed to Astoria for a cruise down the Columbia River. But little did we know that along way we would discover a tiny town full of history, beauty, industry and cheese. That’s right, cheese. Founded in 1853, Tillamook sits … November 20, 2008 | Leave a comment | Read More »

Hunger

Hunger examines the 1981 hunger strike of Irish Republican Army prisoner Bobby Sands and the events that guide to his extreme decision. The film is a remarkable directorial debut from British artist Steve McQueen, who co-wrote the screenplay. Hunger's vivid realism has received acclaim, including the Camera d'Or for best first feature at Cannes, but the unflinching and disturbing prison violence could limit commercial appeal. McQueen said that when he was a child around 11 or 12 the image of B
